Australia Bans Online Poker and Casinos

Facing significant pushback from Australian gamblers, the Australian Senate has essentially prohibited online casinos and poker websites. This legislation, a reaction to a 2015 investigation into the questionable practices of certain foreign gambling platforms, will be implemented within a month. Although internet service providers are anticipated to eventually restrict access to unauthorized websites, the enforcement won’t be instantaneous.

The prohibition comes after a Senate committee session where Australian poker enthusiasts attempted to persuade legislators to view poker as distinct from other types of online wagering. They contended fervently that poker should be excluded from the ban, but their appeals were ultimately ignored.

For a considerable period, Senator David Leyonhjelm has passionately advocated for internet poker. He contends that it’s a contest of ability, not luck, and shouldn’t be categorized with traditional casino offerings regarding legal frameworks. He has spent years promoting a controlled internet poker sector in Australia – one with suitable supervision and levies, as opposed to a complete prohibition.

However, it appears his appeals have been ignored. Encountering ambiguity, numerous prominent entities in the online poker realm opted to withdraw and abandon the Australian market before any revised legislation was even introduced. PokerStars, 888poker, 32red, and Gaming Innovation Group have all withdrawn, ceasing to allow participation from Australia.
